In a decision that could directly affect Martha’s Vineyard, the Town of Brewster was granted a preliminary injunction Friday in Barnstable Superior Court that will halt all Eversource herbicide spraying until Nov. 1, pending Eversource appeal.

The board votes 6-1 against a one-year hold on Eversource vegetation control spraying on the Cape and Islands.

Eversource Energy is poised to conduct its annual herbicide spraying along rights of way on the Cape and Martha’s Vineyard, but opponents of the spraying may not be ready to give up quite yet.

Eight Cape and Islands communities have continued their effort to stop herbicide spraying beneath power lines in their towns, submitting a new round of requests for a hearing before the Department of Agricultural Resources to make their case.

A plan by Eversource to resume using herbicides on the Cape and Vineyard has sparked renewed opposition, with Vineyard Haven, the Martha’s Vineyard Commission, state representatives and others all calling for alternatives.
